Commissioner for Human Rights

Call of the Ombudsman in light of the situation in Ukraine

Date:

Call of the Ombudsman Irena Lipowicz in light of the situation in Ukraine.

The citizens of Poland know the meaning of solidarity, how important and necessary it is in the struggle for freedom. Many people and organizations across Poland rushed spontaneously to help the citizens of Ukraine, whose human rights have been brutally violated for several weeks. As Ombudsman I wanted to thank all those who helped already.
However, today the wave of violence took such a scale that it becomes necessary to call for a general mobilization of the Polish society. Any kind of help matters: by doctors, clergy, employees at central and local government level, social services , NGOs and volunteers. I call upon all people of good will to organize support actions, wherever they are needed – especially to care for the wounded and injured. Any person or family, whose loved ones were killed should know that they have friends in Poland. Also, every citizen of Ukraine fearing for their freedom.
Let our solidarity with the Ukrainian society be proof of how much we value fundamental human rights : the right to life, dignity, freedom and justice.
