68th anniversary of the Mauthausen-Gusen camp liberation

Professor. Irena Lipowicz took part in the celebrations of the 68th anniversary of the liberation of the German-Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen-Gusen near Linz in Austria. The delegation was lead by the Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, representatives of Austria, among them President Heinz Fischer and the president of the Parliament Barbara Prammer, the President of Hungary Janos Ader, the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ivica Daczić, the Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and the President of the Russian State Duma Sergei Naryshkin. The delegation was accompanied by several former Polish prisoners of Mauthausen-Gusen.

 

During the visit a new permanent exhibition was opened in the museum of the Mauthausen concentration camp. Particularly important during this year’s celebration was the unveiling of a memorial dedicated to Henry Sławik, who saved tens of thousands of Poles, among them 5,000 Polish Jews during World War 2. Earlier he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle and the title of the Righteous Among the Nations.
