The Commissioner defends a veterinary surgeon punished for caring for stray animals

A veterinary surgeon, known for caring for stray animals, was punished with a fine for "the illegal running of an animal shelter and the transporting of animals". The Commissioner for Human Rights opened an own initiative investigation into this case. The Commissioner will also remind the competent authorities of the necessity to review the provision on the protection of animals, which shall ensure effective mechanisms of supervision, but cannot serve as a means of curbing citizens’ initiatives for the animals’ welfare.
